AR/ VR Integration into ELT

Hello thereee!!! How are you???
I hope everyone is doing great! You know why I am here.
Another day, another assignment! 💅🏻
This week we are assigned integrate augmented reality (AR) / virtual reality (VR) into english language teaching (ELT).

For our AR-integrated lesson design, we created a virtual city exploration titled ‘ Exploring Vienna!’ aiming to make cultural learning accessible and engaging for A2-level high school preparatory students. The lesson was structured as a three-stop journey, supported by QR codes and 360 virtual tours, allowing students to explore Vienna at their own pace.
It was again a group work, I collaborated with my lovely friends Azra, Begum and Sila! 💖✨

At the first and second stops, students visited two iconic landmarks: Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Using 360stories.com and 360 video tours, learners explored these places visually rather than through static images. This approach helped transform abstract cultural information into a more concrete experience. Instead of memorizing facts, students responded to guiding questions such as “What can you see?” and “Would you like to visit this place?”, encouraging simple descriptive and opinion-based language use.

The third stop focused on a museum visit: Balvedere Palace Museum! again using a virtual tour. Students were asked to take their time, observe the environment, and choose something that caught their attention. This stage supported learner autonomy and allowed students to interact with cultural content according to their interests, which is especially motivating at lower proficiency levels.

As an extra cultural integration, we introduced Wiener Schnitzel. Food served as a familiar and relatable entry point into Austrian culture. This addition balanced historical landmarks with everyday culture and made the lesson more holistic.

Overall, combining AR technology, visual exploration, and cultural elements such as food helped create a student-centered and meaningful learning experience. The lesson showed us that even simple language tasks can become engaging when learners are invited to explore, imagine, and connect with a city beyond the textbook.

See you all in another activity, take care!!! 💖💃🏻
