AI-enhanced CBLP Assignment
Hello everyoneee, I hope everyone is ready for the first assignment of the courseeee!!!!
Have you heard about corpus before?
“A corpus is a large, structured collection of real-life language examples stored electronically and used to observe authentic patterns of use.” (McEnery & Hardie, 2012)
I don't know you, but I had never heard about it until 2 week before. We had an in-class activity about corpora, learned its interface and how it can be used in education (data-driven learning) and integrated with genAI. And after that, we assigned with an activity, it was our turn: Designing AI-enhanced, corpus based material and lesson plan according to ASSURE Model.
Designing an AI-enhanced, corpus-based lesson was definitely one of the most surprising and enjoyable tasks I’ve completed this semester. When we -It was group work, we collaborated with my lovely friends Azra and Sıla, you can just click and visit their blogs- first read the instructions, I honestly thought it would be complicated -corpus tools, AI, lesson planning, material design… It sounded like too many big words in one assignment. But once we started working as a group, everything slowly turned into a very creative (and sometimes chaotic) process.
One of the most enjoyable parts was discovering how alive a corpus actually is. Instead of memorizing grammar rules from a book, we were suddenly exploring thousands of real sentences from real people. It felt like opening a secret language database that no one in high school ever tells you about. Using SKELL was like doing linguistic detective work: “Why does this structure appear here? Why not there?” I really liked that moment when patterns started to make sense. The moment you start working with a corpus, you suddenly feel like Sherlock Holmes.
Adding AI made the whole process even more interactive. Instead of arguing endlessly over grammar rules, the students simply ask ChatGPT—and use it more like a “language coach” rather than a shortcut. Thanks to this entegration, we improve the efficacy of corpus use in language learning and gain a new perspective in education. Overall, the assignment was the new path for me, I think I am getting used to the new term corpara, and excited to use corpus-based learning and implement them in classroom. It is a new eye in my further profession.
